New England Patriots

The Patriots did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Patrick Payton a full 57 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

Sarratt at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Zion Young · DE-EDGE · rank 42
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a problem off the edge, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Bryce Lance · WR · rank 90
Bryce Lance in pick No. 63 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Treydan Stukes · CB · rank 96
Treydan Stukes in pick 95 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Elijah Sarratt · WR · rank 77
Elijah Sarratt in the 125th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Kaleb Elarms-Orr · LB · rank 178
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at the 131st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Tanner Koziol · TE · rank 164
Tanner Koziol in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Patrick Payton · DE-EDGE · rank 248
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in the 191st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · VJ Payne · S · rank 196
They took VJ Payne at par in pick No. 198, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Terion Stewart · RB · rank 240
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Terion Stewart well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
