Call it larceny. Tykee Smith sat on the board until No. 125, and the Packers did not need to be asked twice. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Reaching for Wright left real value on the table behind him. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Kamren Kinchens
· S
· rank 34
Kamren Kinchens at the 25th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Byron Murphy II
· DL
· rank 40
Byron Murphy II in pick 41 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Jackson Powers-Johnson
· C
· rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 57 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Junior Colson
· LB
· rank 76
Junior Colson is a better player than the 88th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 82
Mike Sainristil at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· Tykee Smith
· S
· rank 97
A surprising call. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 25 on Tykee Smith, a safety they were not short of.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Jaylen Wright
· RB
· rank 158
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylen Wright well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.28
· Pick 203
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 197
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Jones in slot 203. It fills a real need, too.
R6.42
· Pick 217
· Jawhar Jordan
· RB
· rank 209
They read the board right and Jawhar Jordan was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 42. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· J.J. Weaver
· LB-EDGE
· rank 228
A premium they did not need to pay, J.J. Weaver a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.26
· Pick 246
· Dwight McGlothern
· CB
· rank 257
They jumped the gun on Dwight McGlothern, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
