You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. The Hadden value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Robinson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher and running back went begging.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.3
· Pick 3
· Jayden Daniels
· QB
· rank 7
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.15
· Pick 15
· Brian Thomas Jr.
· WR
· rank 27
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Ja'Tavion Sanders
· TE
· rank 36
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Tavion Sanders at slot 36 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Kingsley Suamataia
· OT
· rank 61
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kingsley Suamataia. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 57
Value with a capital V on Payton Wilson in pick No. 67, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
· LB
· rank 67
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher and running back to take Jeremiah Trotter Jr., a linebacker that was not the priority.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Maason Smith
· DT
· rank 111
Maason Smith at the 100th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.17
· Pick 117
· Brenden Rice
· WR
· rank 96
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 117 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.1
· Pick 137
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 132
A tidy little value on Christian Jones in the 137th pick, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 145
Tommy Eichenberg in No. 139 is fair value, right on his grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R5.15
· Pick 151
· Kalen King
· CB
· rank 139
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kalen King at slot 151. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Layden Robinson
· OG
· rank 175
Value said wait; Layden Robinson in Round 5, Pick 16 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Kamal Hadden
· CB
· rank 168
They will replay Kamal Hadden at pick 222 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
