Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys found their guy under center in McCarthy: D.

The Johnny Wilson selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 33 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. It grades a D, and the process earned it.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter.

They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Johnson.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In No. 11 they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
In the 23rd overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.28 · Pick 28 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
In pick No. 28 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 45
T'Vondre Sweat at pick 56 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
No edge and no loss on Trey Benson in slot 87; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
They left a pile of value on the table to take Johnny Wilson this early at the 92nd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
Jaylan Ford at No. 174 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Eric Watts · DL-EDGE · rank 230
Eric Watts in pick No. 216 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 186
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Cornelius Johnson in slot 220, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Myles Harden · CB · rank 209
They will replay Myles Harden at the 233rd pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 258
A conviction pick on Ryan Watts at Round 7, Pick 24 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
