The Cowboys did not so much draft Mason Fairchild as overpay for him, 45 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Landing Beebe that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.

In the 2nd overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Jonathon Brooks in No. 56; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Cooper Beebe, who had no business lasting to the 87th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nothing to complain about; Jarrian Jones went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Michael Barrett went about where he belonged in pick 174. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Stefon Thompson in the 212th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
A big swing on Mason Fairchild at pick No. 245, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
