You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Xavier Thomas in the Round 7 slot.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in slot 41. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in Round 2, Pick 25, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on TreVeyon Henderson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Tykee Smith at No. 92 that the board grades a round light. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the 125th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at pick No. 135 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reach for Christian Jones in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Joshua Gray a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Blake Watson in slot 219 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Xavier Thomas at No. 246, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
