Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Nicholas Singleton got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at pick 244. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
Every board in the league had Walker lower, and that gap is the story. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Hit on Omarion Hampton and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
Omarion Hampton at Round 2, Pick 4 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 59 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jalen Royals in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Alfred Collins is a better player than No. 76 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Andrew Mukuba was the payoff at the 81st overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
This one needs a full-page explanation: David Walker in slot 86, miles early. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Danny Stutsman went about where he belonged in the 88th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy bit of business in pick 105, where Jermari Harris graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaxson Dart. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They went early on Ozzy Trapilo in pick No. 124, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Skattebo in slot 127 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Mason Taylor at the 135th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Davison Igbinosun at the 168th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Zane Durant at No. 170 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Earnest Greene III at pick 173. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Connor Colby at pick 186 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 209 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Nicholas Singleton in the 244th pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Tyler Batty in pick No. 247 says they were not listening. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
