Start where it matters. The Patriots took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The Tagovailoa reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Landing Hadden that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Jordan Morgan at No. 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Xavier Legette in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick No. 54 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Dominick Puni in the 77th pick, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Johnny Wilson at slot 112 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Marcus Harris at pick 137 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Xavier Thomas in Round 6, Pick 18 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Braiden McGregor in pick No. 194, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Kamal Hadden was still sitting there in the 214th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 231st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
