Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Renardo Green, the No. 71 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 4 slot.
The Hartman pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. With edge rusher, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a lockdown presence outside at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at the 41st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tyler Guyton in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Max Melton at No. 91 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Will Shipley slipping to slot 126 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Mustapha in pick No. 128 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent the 131st pick on Renardo Green, a safety they were not short of.
Johnny Wilson is a better player than pick 133 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Tyrone Tracy Jr. all the way to slot 159, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on James Williams in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A wild overpay on Nathaniel Watson in the 169th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They reached into another round for Kimani Vidal, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sam Hartman in No. 202 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Myles Harden at pick 219 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Jha'Quan Jackson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nathan Thomas at the 255th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
