You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with J.J. Weaver in pick 253. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Coleman at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 1 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 5th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 10 they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Chris Braswell at Round 2, Pick 6, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylen Wright at the 69th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Keon Coleman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kiran Amegadjie slid further than he should have, and slot 75 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Malik Washington at Round 4, Pick 4 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Isaac Guerendo at pick 109 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tommy Eichenberg in the 110th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
McKinnley Jackson in No. 121 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 139 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Khristian Boyd at the 180th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Michael Barrett in the Round 7 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
J.J. Weaver at slot 253 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
