Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Javon Bullard got past him. The Chiefs do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 98. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
If Edwards pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They jumped the gun on Kris Jenkins, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Marist Liufau was the payoff at the 94th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Matt Goncalves in slot 95 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Daijun Edwards at No. 96, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Javon Bullard in the 98th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Javon Foster at the 133rd overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Nehemiah Pritchett, who had no business lasting to pick No. 158. A minor itch, scratched.
Somehow Javion Cohen was still sitting there in pick 172, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Javon Baker in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Mark Perry at par in Round 7, Pick 30, which is nothing to complain about. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
