You could see the war room lean forward. Marcellas Dial at pick No. 229 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They will need Rouse to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in pick 68. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cooper Beebe at No. 95 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Darius Robinson is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
LaDarius Henderson at the 158th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Curtis Jacobs at slot 172 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Michael Barrett at the 182nd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Christian Jones at Round 6, Pick 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Marcellas Dial here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached into another round for Walter Rouse, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
