This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 99 name on the board, stolen at the 168th overall pick.
The cost of the Truss reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a load in the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
Circle this one: Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elic Ayomanor this early at the 76th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a linebacker like Deontae Lawson reach the 148th overall pick and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nicholas Singleton in pick 168 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Miles Frazier. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Lathan Ransom at slot 171 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Raheim Sanders in Round 6, Pick 12 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Xavier Truss in Round 6, Pick 34 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Jamaree Caldwell at pick 247, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
