The real work happened on the phones. The Chiefs fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Robinson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Keon Coleman at pick 39 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kingsley Suamataia. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in slot 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Ja'Lynn Polk went about where he belonged in the 71st overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Cam Hart in the 91st pick leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaac Guerendo a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Theo Johnson in Round 4, Pick 16 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Layden Robinson at slot 155 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Curtis Jacobs in pick 196 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
