The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Jase McClellan, the No. 217 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 19 like a gift left on the doorstep. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Need was not the driver here.
Patrick Paul at the 59th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cooper Beebe in pick No. 85 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Beau Brade in pick 123 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ainias Smith at Round 4, Pick 27 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They did well to land Cedric Johnson in slot 164, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Jase McClellan here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nathaniel Watson slid further than he should have, and the 248th overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
