Kansas City Chiefs

Good, not great, for the Chiefs: B-.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chiefs would have aced it. Jaylon Carlies at pick 221 is 49 spots clear of where he belonged.

The Nourzad value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.8 · Pick 40 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 70
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 40 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Ruke Orhorhoro · DT · rank 61
Ruke Orhorhoro at the 64th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Malik Washington · WR · rank 81
Malik Washington is a better player than No. 95 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Andru Phillips · CB · rank 77
They will replay Andru Phillips at the 100th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Tyrone Tracy Jr. · WR · rank 126
Tyrone Tracy Jr. in pick No. 131 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Hunter Nourzad · C · rank 118
They robbed the room for Hunter Nourzad here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 160
Nice patience on Cornelius Johnson, who had no business lasting to pick 173. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.1 · Pick 221 · Jaylon Carlies · S · rank 270
They reached into another round for Jaylon Carlies, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
