The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Charles Turner III, 80 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it.
The Justin Fields pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 9 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in pick 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Brandon Dorlus in No. 68, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.

Theo Johnson at the 139th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach on Christian Jones in slot 182; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
Demani Richardson in the 224th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Charles Turner III at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
