The Collin Schlee selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 367 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Whatever Collin Schlee becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Hunter Nourzad in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ryan Watts well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Trente Jones in pick 173 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jermayne Lole at Round 6, Pick 10 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cody Simon in pick No. 213, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wild overpay on Corey Rucker in pick 231, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Brandon Thomas at Round 7, Pick 22, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
