You build a draft on nights like this. Damien Martinez had no business being available in the 208th overall pick, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They are betting West proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get the heartbeat of the defense at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Steal is underselling it; Emeka Egbuka at the 61st overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in pick 79; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Hollin Pierce at pick No. 148 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Dorian Strong in the 175th pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid a round early for CJ West in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Damien Martinez was still sitting there in slot 208, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jordan Hancock in No. 238, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They barely believed it either: Carson Vinson still on the board at Round 7, Pick 32. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
