Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Nicholas Singleton, the No. 103 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 218. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They are betting Williams proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Adding Spencer Brown by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They reached a country mile for Aireontae Ersery at Round 1, Pick 30, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Malaki Starks in the 41st overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mykel Williams well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wild overpay on Donovan Jackson in pick No. 72, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a tight end like Tyler Warren reach the 85th pick and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Deone Walker at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Daylen Everette at pick 120, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board fumbled Deontae Lawson all the way to No. 144, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A conviction pick on Nazir Stackhouse at slot 158 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jared Wilson. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Nicholas Singleton at pick 218 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the 223rd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Oscar Delp in the 239th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
