Nobody had Marcus Harris this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 33 spots to get him at Round 6, Pick 29. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Getting Irving where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Gerald Everett leading the way.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
In slot 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy little value on Xavier Legette in the 41st pick, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 57 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyler Davis. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Cooper Beebe enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 70. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Junior Colson at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy bit of business in the 105th overall pick, where Bucky Irving graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let Tykee Smith come to them and pounced at slot 107. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kris Abrams-Draine in the 124th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A real head-scratcher, Ben Sinnott in Round 4, Pick 25 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylen Wright a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nothing to complain about; Michael Barrett went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Christian Jones in No. 203 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Marcus Harris this early at No. 204. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They paid up for Dwight McGlothern at the 245th pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
