You could see the war room lean forward. Braelon Allen at the 183rd overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Call it a C- and check back in two years.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Hicks pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board.
Hit on Cooper DeJean and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 37 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Brenden Rice at slot 69 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Tykee Smith, who had no business lasting to No. 105. A minor itch, scratched.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 10 on Jaden Hicks with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
They did well to land Dallin Holker in the 142nd pick, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steal is underselling it; Braelon Allen at the 183rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sheridan Jones at pick 226 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
