Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Lions were there to profit. Sonny Styles, the No. 21 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 205. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 6 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Taking Spencer Fano in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Mansoor Delane all the way to the 118th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Jordyn Tyson at Round 4, Pick 28 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kayden McDonald in slot 157 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Kenyon Sadiq in No. 181 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in pick 205, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Akheem Mesidor at pick No. 213 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Lee Hunter in the 222nd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
