The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Every board in the league had Barner lower, and that gap is the story. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Good price on Troy Franklin in Round 2, Pick 4, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Chris Braswell at the 40th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They took Kiran Amegadjie at par in pick No. 67, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They liked Dominick Puni enough to skip the value, taking him in the 78th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Cam Hart went about where he belonged in No. 100. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Mason McCormick in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on AJ Barner at slot 152, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylan Ford slid further than he should have, and the 222nd pick is lovely value for the linebacker. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
