If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bears would have aced it. Marvin Jones Jr. at slot 247 is 84 spots clear of where he belonged. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Hill Jr. makes the weekend a net positive.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a bendy edge with upside, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Christen Miller at par in No. 57, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jacob Rodriguez at the 62nd overall pick is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Anthony Hill Jr. in Round 2, Pick 31 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They did well to land Zakee Wheatley in the 95th pick, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Logan Jones is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ja'Kobi Lane at No. 125 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good price on Jack Endries in slot 129, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Aamil Wagner in the 186th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
They let Domani Jackson come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Seth McGowan in pick 193, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
TJ Hall at the 239th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
