New England Patriots

The Patriots won the night they stopped Brownlee Jr. from sliding. Grade: C+.

You build a draft on nights like this. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. had no business being available in pick 182, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

If Coker pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.

A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.27 · Pick 27 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 30
In slot 27 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
J.J. McCarthy in Round 2, Pick 2 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 45
A premium they did not need to pay, Roman Wilson a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 67
Patrick Paul in the 66th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 93
They reached a country mile for Bucky Irving at No. 68, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 85
Cade Stover at pick 71 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 76
A tidy bit of business in the 90th pick, where Cooper Beebe graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 132
Ben Sinnott in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 144
A reach for Tommy Eichenberg in pick 136; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Jarvis Brownlee Jr. · CB · rank 115
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at the 182nd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Jalen Coker · WR · rank 259
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen Coker in slot 222, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.9 · Pick 229 · Daequan Hardy · CB · rank 195
Daequan Hardy in No. 229 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
