The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Colston Loveland, the No. 61 name on the board, in the Round 4 slot. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. Sturdivant has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
Nic Scourton at No. 41 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Barrett Carter at pick 72 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Maxwell Hairston in slot 86; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let a tight end like Colston Loveland reach Round 4, Pick 7 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on J.Michael Sturdivant in the 144th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 218 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Jaydn Ott worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A clean, defensible pick in the 236th pick with a little surplus value in PJ Williams. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Makari Paige in No. 256. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
