Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Tommy Eichenberg, the No. 145 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 173.
The Johnson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a building block for the line, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They liked Xavier Legette enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 64. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Theo Johnson in No. 95, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 132, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dwight McGlothern. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They robbed the room for Tommy Eichenberg here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
