The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 45 spots for Mason Fairchild, and value like that does not grow back.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here.

The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster. On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
