After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
If Thomas pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Ladd McConkey in the 34th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Malachi Corley in the 68th pick, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 103 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Dallin Holker at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nathan Thomas at pick 182 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Daequan Hardy at par in No. 224, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A big swing on Xavier Thomas at Round 7, Pick 12, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
