The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Cam Skattebo slide 56 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
The Belton reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach No. 44 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Deone Walker at the 76th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Kyren Lacy all the way to slot 148, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Billy Bowman Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Cam Skattebo in Round 5, Pick 33, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Antwane Wells Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DJ Campbell well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Anthony Belton in the 209th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Joey Slackman at pick 248 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
