The rest of the league will want that one back. Cam Skattebo tumbling to the Cowboys in the 186th pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about.
The cost of the Baker reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game, outstanding value to boot.
They will replay Jalon Walker at pick No. 44 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Alfred Collins in pick 76 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Kyren Lacy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Joshua Gray at Round 5, Pick 31 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
JJ Pegues at No. 170 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached a country mile for Tosh Baker at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cam Skattebo at slot 186 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, Jahvaree Ritzie in pick 209 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jamaree Caldwell at No. 248 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
