The Patriots bet big and early on Barryn Sorrell, 93 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Higgins. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback and tight end went begging.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tetairoa McMillan in pick 15. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Cameron Williams at slot 38 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a cornerback like Trey Amos reach No. 69 and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Zy Alexander adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback and tight end untouched.
Cam Skattebo at Round 4, Pick 4 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Jordan Phillips still on the board at the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Ahmed Hassanein at the 145th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Barryn Sorrell in pick 219, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: Woody Marks at Round 7, Pick 4 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 234 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
