Somewhere a general manager is explaining how M.J. Devonshire got past him. The Chargers do not have to explain a thing at the Round 7 slot.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamari Lassiter. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 5, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kalen King at slot 143 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Cornelius Johnson at No. 181, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
M.J. Devonshire in the 225th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Jalen Coker in the 253rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
