The trade table was a mismatch, and the Chargers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A.
They banked enough surplus on Spann-Ford to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In the end it comes back to Malik Nabers, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Kris Jenkins at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Blake Corum at the 69th pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mason McCormick at pick No. 106 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Cole Bishop in pick 139, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Frank Gore Jr. in No. 183. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylen Harrell is a better player than Round 7, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Brevyn Spann-Ford, who had no business lasting to the 256th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
