If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Thor Griffith at pick 171 is 111 spots clear of where he belonged. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
However the rest shakes out, Mondon Jr. at that price is a win they earned. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th overall pick they get a two-high chess piece. Need was not the driver here.
They barely believed it either: Omarion Hampton still on the board at the Round 2 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A premium they did not need to pay, Donovan Jackson a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tai Felton at No. 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on JJ Pegues in pick No. 146, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Jay Higgins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Lathan Ransom in No. 168 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Nicholas Singleton at slot 170 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Thor Griffith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: DJ Campbell in the 189th overall pick, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 6, Pick 34 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Anthony Belton at the 228th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let a linebacker like Jack Kiser reach pick 248 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
