You can hear the double-takes from here. The Steelers took Wesley Williams at No. 237, roughly 75 spots before his name belonged. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Getting Haulcy where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a cornerstone up front. Need was not the driver here.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 53 on Emmanuel Pregnon with tight end unsolved.
Somehow A.J. Haulcy was still sitting there in No. 76, and they pounced on premier safety value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Zachariah Branch in slot 85 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Dontay Corleone still on the board at the 86th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nicholas Singleton at pick No. 99 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach on Harold Perkins Jr. in the 121st pick; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Parker Brailsford at offensive lineman with tight end open.
A tidy little value on Drew Allar in pick No. 161, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Robert Spears-Jennings at the 216th overall pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on Xavier Nwankpa in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Thaddeus Dixon was the payoff at pick 230. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Wesley Williams at slot 237 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
