You can draft well and still miss the point. The Chiefs did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to tight end, which was the need that mattered most.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Gabriel Murphy at pick No. 95 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Josh Newton in the 132nd overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tykee Smith at No. 159. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Jha'Quan Jackson at par in Round 5, Pick 37, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jordan Magee in the Round 7 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
