Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They will need Tupuola-Fetui to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a passer to set the clock by, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Kool-Aid McKinstry in the 34th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Lynn Polk. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Patrick Paul at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; McKinnley Jackson in pick 137 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 180th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Layden Robinson at pick No. 193 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Daijun Edwards at No. 231 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
