You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Enrique Cruz Jr. in Round 7, Pick 37. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
The Caldwell pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a bendy edge with upside, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jacob Rodriguez in No. 63 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A straight-up fair deal on Bryce Lance at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Jack Endries went about where he belonged in pick 125. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
J.C. Davis at Round 4, Pick 31 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Ephesians Prysock at pick No. 191 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on VJ Payne. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Cole Payton at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jeff Caldwell in the 211th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Bobby Jamison-Travis in pick 212, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Eli Heidenreich in pick No. 247; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Adam Randall this early at Round 7, Pick 34. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Enrique Cruz Jr. at slot 253, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
