The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 233rd overall pick on Jake Briningstool a full 83 spots early.

Landing Nelson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback and quarterback still on the board.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 15
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at pick No. 14, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 44
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at slot 44 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 77
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 12. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 84
A surprising call. With cornerback and quarterback still to address, they spent the 78th pick on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 97
Tyler Davis slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.13 · Pick 149 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 149
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty'Ron Hopper. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.15 · Pick 190 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 148
Circle this one: Jack Nelson at Round 6, Pick 15 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.17 · Pick 192 · Moose Muhammad III · WR · rank 166
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Moose Muhammad III in No. 192, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Jake Briningstool · TE · rank 316
They reached into another round for Jake Briningstool, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
