The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 233rd overall pick on Jake Briningstool a full 83 spots early.
Landing Nelson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback and quarterback still on the board.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at pick No. 14, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at slot 44 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 12. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A surprising call. With cornerback and quarterback still to address, they spent the 78th pick on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Tyler Davis slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.

A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Moose Muhammad III in No. 192, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
