You build a draft on nights like this. M.J. Devonshire had no business being available in Round 7, Pick 24, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
Benson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
The veteran additions, David Bakhtiari chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
R2.18
· Pick 50
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 49
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 18, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.21
· Pick 53
· Kingsley Suamataia
· OT
· rank 61
They went early on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 53, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.24
· Pick 56
· Trey Benson
· RB
· rank 87
A wild overpay on Trey Benson in No. 56, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
R3.24
· Pick 87
· T.J. Tampa
· CB
· rank 51
Somehow T.J. Tampa was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Maason Smith
· DT
· rank 111
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Maason Smith well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
R4.20
· Pick 120
· Johnny Wilson
· WR
· rank 125
A straight-up fair deal on Johnny Wilson at slot 120, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.36
· Pick 172
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 132
You do not let an offensive lineman like Christian Jones reach pick 172 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.38
· Pick 174
· Jaylan Ford
· LB
· rank 205
Jaylan Ford in the 174th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Cornelius Johnson
· WR
· rank 187
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Cornelius Johnson in No. 216, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.13
· Pick 233
· Andrew Raym
· C
· rank 239
No edge and no loss on Andrew Raym in slot 233; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.24
· Pick 244
· M.J. Devonshire
· CB
· rank 192
M.J. Devonshire at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
