The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Lassiter. The Proctor reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get the face of the franchise, even if it was a touch early.
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 36th pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Darius Robinson at the 40th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kamari Lassiter in slot 67 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Kingsley Suamataia come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 14. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy little value on Khyree Jackson in pick No. 100, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mason McCormick at No. 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tommy Eichenberg at slot 152 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached a country mile for Josh Proctor at the 222nd pick, and the board is aghast. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
