New England Patriots

The Patriots turned the phones into found money: B.

It is the swing that defines the weekend: Bub Means in the Round 6 slot, a good 52 spots before the room expected him. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

The Williams steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 8
In No. 6 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 45
A tidy bit of business in slot 57, where T'Vondre Sweat graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 72
Sedrick Van Pran at pick No. 68 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
They paid sticker price for Khyree Jackson in the 89th pick, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
Theo Johnson in Round 4, Pick 3 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 128
Isaac Guerendo in No. 107 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · James Williams · LB · rank 124
James Williams slipping to the 137th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 216
They reached a country mile for Garret Greenfield at the 180th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Bub Means · WR · rank 245
A big swing on Bub Means at pick No. 193, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Tylan Grable · OT · rank 231
A straight-up fair deal on Tylan Grable at Round 7, Pick 11, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
