The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Ashton Jeanty, the No. 2 name on the board, in the Round 3 slot. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that.
In the 30th overall pick they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jahdae Barron at cornerback with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
A safety of that caliber at the 56th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jalon Walker at No. 62 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ashton Jeanty in slot 77, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Tre Harris still on the board at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
