You could see the war room lean forward. Jeffrey Bassa at Round 7, Pick 4 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They are betting Campbell proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a true top target, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Conerly Jr.. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Omarion Hampton in No. 69 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jake Majors at Round 4, Pick 4 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for DJ Campbell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Gunnar Helm in the 148th pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Cam Skattebo in slot 168 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jacob Parrish in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A big swing on Shilo Sanders at Round 7, Pick 1, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jeffrey Bassa at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
