The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Tim Smith at slot 174 regardless, 179 picks early. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
That Dotson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Princely Umanmielen in pick No. 39. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tre Harris at the 44th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Andrew Mukuba at pick 76 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jordan James in No. 170 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ty Hamilton in slot 172 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tim Smith in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Mello Dotson at Round 6, Pick 12 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Micah Morris in the 211th overall pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Ricky White III still on the board at pick 249. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
