Nobody else had Barryn Sorrell anywhere near the 219th pick. The Patriots did, by 109 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The Gordon II pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Donovan Jackson in the Round 2 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jackson Slater. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 3, Pick 13, and the board did not agree. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Bhayshul Tuten at pick 105 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Ahmed Hassanein at slot 140, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
JJ Pegues at pick No. 145 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Shilo Sanders at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Hancock went about where he belonged in pick 203. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ollie Gordon II in slot 205 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Barryn Sorrell this early at No. 219. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
