You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Akheem Mesidor in pick 145.
That Simon pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zy Alexander. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
TreVeyon Henderson in No. 77 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Andrew Mukuba all the way to slot 105, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let a wide receiver like Jaylin Noel reach the 129th pick and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Akheem Mesidor in Round 5, Pick 6, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cody Simon at the 195th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They talked themselves into Shilo Sanders at the 219th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
