If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chargers would have aced it. MJ Sherman at the Round 7 slot is 59 spots clear of where he belonged. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a red-zone target to build around. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at par in pick No. 37, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 42. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Junior Colson went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 5. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Blake Corum in pick 71 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Zak Zinter in the 92nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Circle this one: Ainias Smith at the 139th pick is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Chau Smith-Wade in the 183rd overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Erick All at No. 223 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on MJ Sherman at pick 256, well ahead of any board in the building. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
